Repairing Damaged Concrete Floors

posted by Sakrete Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 7:54 AM

Problem: Mid-Century Modern home built between 1964-1966, used lightweight concrete as floor covering. Over 40+ years concrete in high traffic areas failed and disintegrated under carpeting. This resulted in dips, flexible spots, metallic creaks and moans

Solution: Looking for a solution that was self leveling, easy to apply, could be applied in a variety of depth thicknesses, easy to mix and install. Choice Sakrete Flo-Coat.

Old Green Shag…

Master Bedroom concrete failure

Hallway concrete failure

Cleaning and applying a coat of acrylic binder

Cutaway of flooring, steel corrugated flooring, covered with lightweight concrete

Cutting in a stairway to downstairs, pounding with sledge hammer turned existing floor into rubble

Mixing some Flo-Coat

Finished product, wanted the weight strength qualities hence going with Flo-Coat. Turned out smooth enough to install carpet for now, but will be placing tile and wood flooring as part of phase 2 of the remodel.

Used Flo-Coat to fill in depressions and failed concrete in high traffic areas. In some spots went back and put on a second coat – removed all flex, noise, and made the floor level as desired.

Carpet going in – needed to use screws through the tack-strip but did not take the installer that much longer.

Master Bedroom – final floor outcome, all level, no depressions, no creaking / flexing of metal floor panels

Hallway into Great Room – level, and no depressions

Exterior View – on to landscaping, no floor worries
