Concrete Damp Proofing & Leak Repair

Cement based substrates are always susceptible to possible moisture or water intrusion because concrete and masonry surfaces are porous. This means that moisture is able to pass through it. There are multiple signs of moisture and water intrusion:

  • Walls and/or floor feel and look damp
  • Visible water intrusion from wall and/or floor joints
  • Visible standing water
  • High relative humidity in the area

Methods for correcting these conditions can vary based on the severity and cause.
Evaluate the area and determine when and how the intrusion is happening and locate where it’s coming from. Possible culprits contributing to this intrusion:

  • Broken or damaged ground pipes
  • High water table or naturally high moisture levels in the ground
  • Poor soil drainage or grade sloping
  • Inadequate or deteriorating foundation vaper barrier
  • Excessive pressure from the ground water causing moisture

Water intrusion resulting from harsh hydrostatic pressure issues must be addressed by other means such as diverting ground water or applying waterproof materials to the outer side of the substrate. Tips for damp proofing & leak repair:
Preparation is key to any project

  • Remove all loose and unstable concrete or masonry from the repair area.
  • Clean the area from dirt, dust and contaminants that could interfere with bonding.
  • Eliminate grease, oil, paint, sealer or any other foreign materials that will inhibit bond.
  • Make repairs to masonry as needed before damp proofing.
  • Follow material instructions for preparation, use and placement.
